It was perfect timing. Alex and Charlotte, as well as the kids were sitting at the kitchen table having their afternoon tea. The kids were worn out after sport and the talk was for an early dinner, movie and then bed.
Vonnie stood sheepishly in the doorway while Chris lied and told them that they hadnât been able to pick the pup up until during the week. He listened patiently to the results of the soccer and netball games and even asked a few questions. Charlotte had tried to get Vonnie to come and sit with them but she made the excuse that she needed to get something out of Chrisâs car. Finally, the conversation slowed and Chris took the opportunity to announce that he had bought something in town for their wedding.
âNow itâs a bit fancy and Iâm not sure if youâll have to move the furniture for it to fit in but when I showed Vonnie, we decided that it was the best present weâve seen and we bought it together. Itâs from one of the shops in town and itâs for you all as a wedding present. Stay there and Iâll bring it in.
Vonnie hung in the doorway, amused by the disinterested looks on Isla and Eliâs faces. Chris appeared again. âYou have to all close your eyes and then open them when we tell you to,â Vonnie said, trying to keep the excitement out of her voice.
Everyone did as they were told and Chris placed the box down in the middle of the table. âOpen it,â he said.
Isla had laid her head on the table and hadnât looked up even when the box was put down. Eli was busy taking his shoes off and only looked up when Charlotte squealed loudly.
âNo way,â she shrieked, leaning in and picking up the contents of the box.
Alex shook his head and took the bundle from her, the pink ribbon Chris had tied around the pupâs neck falling off and landing on Islaâs face. She opened her eyes and looked up, her screams of delight making Jasper bark and scratch at the screen door.
Charlotte hugged Vonnie and then Chris, handing the pup carefully to Eli who had a quick cuddle before giving it to Isla. The pup squirmed and Alex took it from her, holding it up high and looking it over. âSheâs a beauty. What a fantastic present. Thank you both.â
Chris stood next to Vonnie who had just reappeared back in the kitchen. In her hand she held the puppy cage, the other two fat pups yapping and jumping around in it eager to be let out. âWeâve had a very spontaneous day, Chris and I,â she said. âThe little one with the white foot is mine and is called Billie. The other one is Chrisâs, and weâve named it Pat. Billie Jean King and Pat Rafter.â
There was lots of loud laughter and chatter and the pups were passed around and cuddled while everyone discussed which one was which and how they were different.
